Do not think that you have to make a bid for the best score. Sacrifice bids can be excellent results
Example: Opponents and you not not vulnerable
If opponents bid and make 4 spades they score 420 points
If you can win the bidding but only go 2 down doubled the opponents score 300 points i.e 120 less
If the opponents are vulnerable and you are not vulnerable and have a hand which they can bid and make 4 spades they will score 620 On the other hand if you intervene and win the bidding but go 3 down doubled the opponents score 500 i.e. 120 points less than if they had bid and made 4 spades.
