Tarmac delivered at 160 degrees was kept warm with sheets in the road until transferred.
Tarmac was scooped up by mechanical barrows
Tarmac laid roughly level before being leveled
Contractors used were Trevor May |
How The preparatory work consisted of 1) Weed killing the Courts 2) Having skip delivered 3) Removing old perimeter netting (It was taken that night) 4) Drilling holes about 1" 5) Filling holes with gravel 6) Drilling out old posts 7) Concreting in new post 8) Painting gates and posts 9) Cutting out old roots 10) Coating with tar binder 11) Erecting new netting The laying of the tarmac was done by: Laying metal guides down the court. Tarmac was then delivered and spread fairly evenly between the guide rails. Two persons then slid a heavy metal scraper along the two metal guides, scraping the tarmac level. It was then rolled. Subsequent rows were done with just one metal guide and 3mm thick board (to allow for compaction) on top of the tar already laid and rollered. |
--- Maintenance We have been issued with a 23 page booklet with maintainance guidelines but the main points that apply to us are summarised as follows. The main concern is that the courts should not be played upon if the surface becomes soft in hard weather - play must stop immediately or major damage will result. Trainers should not be worn - their hard soles will break the court surface. The courts should be vacuumed weekly and moss and algae dealt with monthly. Mosskiller and a professional wash should be given annually. Petrol will seriously damage the court so please do not fill the vacuum cleaner on the court. Chewing gum, cigarettes, skateboards, roller skates, bicycles and pets should be banned to prevent damage being caused. Bird droppings and worms should be removed as if they dry out on court and in warm weather shrink and in the process pull off the paint or even stone chippings. If every man in the club could vacuum the courts once a year then we will manage otherwise I think perhaps we should employ someone to do this job. |
